Tong Its (written Tongits in the Philippines) is a three-player rummy game: draw, meld sets and runs, lay off cards by sapaw, and finish by emptying your hand, calling Draw, or holding the lowest count when the stock runs out.

Tong Its, written Tongits at most Filipino tables, is a three-player rummy game: you draw, form sets and runs, and race to leave your hand lighter than the other two. Learn the order of a turn once and every hand follows the same loop. The rules below follow the Pagat card-game reference, and the shared basics sit on the card game rules pillar for casino lobbies.
Tong Its at a glance
| Item | How it works | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|
| Players | Three | Not a two-player or four-player game |
| Deck | One standard 52-card deck, no jokers | Ace is low; A-K-Q is not a run |
| Deal | Dealer 13 cards, others 12 | The winner of a hand deals the next |
| Meld types | Sets (3 or 4 of a rank) and runs (3 or more in a suit) | A card sits in one meld at a time |
| Card points | Ace 1, J/Q/K 10, others face value | Lowest unmatched total wins a count |
Because the deck has no jokers, the joker card and the games that use it matters only when a lobby table says otherwise on its own rules screen.
Tongits rules for beginners: a turn in four steps
A turn is the same every time, so memorise the four steps and the rest is judgement.
- Draw one card from the stock, or take the top discard only if it completes a meld with cards from your hand. A meld made that way must be shown at once.
- Expose any set or run you want on the table. After a stock draw this is optional, and melds you keep in hand are not counted against you at the end.
- Lay off cards by sapaw if you wish, with no limit per turn.
- Discard one card face up on the pile. The dealer starts by optionally exposing melds and then discarding.
Play passes to the player on your right, counterclockwise. Your hand counts as opened once at least one meld is on the table, and that matters for every ending below.
Sapaw: laying off on any meld
Sapaw is the Filipino word for laying a card onto a meld that is already face up. You may add to your own sets and runs or to either opponent’s, and you need not have opened your own hand first. For example, with a meld of 7-7-7 on the table, a fourth seven goes on by sapaw, and a run of 4-5-6 of hearts takes a 3 or 7 of hearts.
| Sapaw example | Meld on the table | Card you lay off |
|---|---|---|
| Set | 7 of clubs, 7 of hearts, 7 of spades | 7 of diamonds |
| Run | 4, 5, 6 of hearts | 3 or 7 of hearts |
Two limits apply. The top discard cannot be taken just to sapaw it; it must form a new meld with at least two cards from your hand. And when a card is laid onto a player’s meld, that player cannot call Draw on their next turn.
Bahay Tongits: reading the word at your table
Bahay means house in Tagalog, and the word turns up in Tongits talk with the meaning each group or game gives it. The Pagat reference does not define it, so this page does not fix one meaning for it. Before you stake anything, check these three points:
- Which seat or role the word names at that table.
- Whether it changes who pays whom.
- What the lobby game’s rules screen says about it.
Read how the table or the lobby game’s rules screen uses the term and whether it changes who pays whom.
If blackjack-style banking games are more your speed, the Pontoon rules compared with blackjack show a game where one player is the bank against everyone else, which Tong Its never is.
Three ways a hand ends
| Ending | When it happens | Who wins |
|---|---|---|
| Tongit | You use every card in melds or by sapaw | You, immediately |
| Draw | An opened player calls it before drawing; others fold or challenge | Fold: the caller. Challenge: lowest count, with ties going to the challenger |
| Stock runs out | The last draw is finished | Lowest count among opened players |
A player who has not opened by the end is burned (sunog) and pays an extra penalty. Chip amounts for aces, secret sets of four and Tongit are customary and vary by group, so read the table’s own payment list. If you also play lobby card games, the studio’s own titles are grouped on the JILI provider reference page, and those are slot titles that share none of these steps.

FAQ
How many people play Tong Its?
Three. The rules reference this page draws on describes it as a game for exactly three players using one standard 52-card deck, with the dealer getting thirteen cards and the others twelve.
What is sapaw in Tongits?
Sapaw is laying off: adding a card to a set or run already on the table, yours or another player's. Doing it on someone's meld also stops that player from calling Draw on their next turn.
Ano ang ibig sabihin ng sunog sa Tongits?
Sunog (burned) means you never opened your hand with a meld before the hand ended. A burned player owes the winner an extra penalty on top of the normal payment.
