Red Dog is a banking card game where you bet that a third card will land between two cards already on the table, and the spread between those two cards sets the payout. The version in casinos is played against the house, not against other players, and this page follows the pagat.com rules reference for it. Read the card game rules every table shares first if ante, push and raise are new words.
How Red Dog is played
- Place an ante before any card is dealt.
- The dealer turns two cards face up.
- If the two cards are adjacent in rank, such as a jack and a ten, the round is a push and your ante is returned.
- If the two cards are equal, a third card is dealt at once. A third match pays 11 to 1 on the ante, and any other third card is a push.
- If there is a gap, you may call (keep only your ante) or raise by up to the size of your ante.
- The dealer turns a third card. You win if it ranks strictly between the first two, and you lose if it falls outside or matches one of them.
Red Dog spread payouts
The pagat.com casino version pays on a fixed scale that depends on the spread, and the chance of winning is plain arithmetic from the 50 cards left.
| Spread (ranks between) | Payout (pagat.com) | Cards that win | Chance the third card falls between |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 to 1 | 4 of 50 | 8% |
| 2 | 4 to 1 | 8 of 50 | 16% |
| 3 | 2 to 1 | 12 of 50 | 24% |
| 4 or more | 1 to 1 | 16 or more of 50 | 32% and up |
Aces count as high, so ace and king are adjacent. At a spread of 11, the widest possible, 44 of the 50 cards win, which is 88%. Payout tables differ by casino and by table, so open the rules screen of the version you play before you ante.
How often each opening appears
Two cards dealt from 52 can pair up in 1,326 ways. The arithmetic splits them like this.
| Opening | Ways out of 1,326 | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Adjacent ranks (push) | 192 | 14.48% |
| Equal ranks | 78 | 5.88% |
| Spread of 1 | 176 | 13.27% |
| Spread of 2 | 160 | 12.07% |
| Spread of 3 | 144 | 10.86% |
| Spread of 4 or more | 576 | 43.44% |
So about one deal in five (192 plus 78, which is 20.36%) ends before you decide anything. A spread of 4 or more is the most common opening, and it carries the lowest payout.
The two games called Red Dog
Pagat describes an older Red Dog, also called High Card Pool, in which players hold five cards and bet that one of them is higher than a dealt card of the same suit. American casinos now use the name for the game on this page. If a lobby lists a Red Dog table, the rules screen tells you which version it deals.
| Name | Cards each player holds | You win when |
|---|---|---|
| Red Dog (casino) | None, three cards on the table | The third card ranks between the first two |
| Red Dog (High Card Pool) | 5 | A card in hand beats the dealt card in the same suit |
| In Between, Acey Deucey, Yablon | None, three cards on the table | The same as casino Red Dog |
Red Dog next to other table games
| Game | Who you play against | What decides a round |
|---|---|---|
| Red Dog | The house | Whether a third card ranks between two |
| Pontoon’s blackjack-style hands | The banker | Hand total against the banker |
| Tong Its for three players | The other two players | Melds, calls and lowest count |
Set a bet unit meaning in plain words before you start, such as a ₱100 ante in a ₱2,000 session (example figures), so a raise never surprises you. No pattern in the spreads changes the next card, and nothing here promises a win.
Play only if you are 21 or older.
